The Amazon Rainforest

Cuyabeno Lodge

Cuyabeno Lodge is located in the north east of Ecuador, on the “Laguna Grande”, in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. It is one of the few protected areas in the world, located precisely on the equator. Cuyabeno Lodge is the pioneer in tourism operation in Cuyabeno, Amazonia Ecuador. It’s the first Eco-friendly Lodge in the Cuyabeno National Park. The Cuyabeno Reserve and the Cuyabeno Lodge are unique places in the Amazon rainforest that give you the best opportunity to observe Fauna and Flora.

When Cuyabeno Lodge started operating in 1988, the owners believed that the rainforest traveler should be accommodated in conditions, which would be both in harmony with the surrounding environment and attuned to the needs of the modern visitor. In Cuyabeno, Cuyabeno Lodge is the pioneer in tourist operation and they have built the first Lodge in the Cuyabeno National Park. Their guides are bilingual, naturalist and native.

The Lodge facilities include a restaurant, a reading and information room and a bar. Electricity is provided by solar panels energy. The installations and activities comply with strict procedures designed to conserve and protect the rainforest and to reduce the potential impact from tourism.

OTHER DETAILS

Itineraries and activities to explore the Wildlife Reserve can be adjusted according to group interests. Groups of more than 4 have the option to start the tour on the day of their choice (no Wednesdays and no Sundays). Groups of 1-3 travelers will be asked to join another group. Please inquire regarding  availability. Cuyabeno Lodge welcomes and encourages visits from families, students and researchers.

One of the best ways to explore the rainforest is by canoe; in this way you will have the opportunity to see this wet and wild green world in an intimate and highly rewarding way.

The reserve (over 602.000 hectares), primary rainforest, boasts an incredible variety of Neotropical wildlife: River dolphins, tapirs, caimans, anacondas, monkeys, the notorious piranha, and many others. The bird life is spectacular: the prehistoric-looking hoatzin, the umbrella bird, blue headed parrot, the scarlet macaw, the legendary harpy-eagle. There are still communities of ancient indigenous tribes such as the Siona, the Secoya and the Cofan who have lived in the Amazon basin for thousands of years.
